Lava- Visual, Shaders, Textures - Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok

During Dawn of Ragnarok , I worked on the visual dev, shader and textures for the lava. Along with overall technical art from Emi Dimitrova.

With the restrictive time frame, it was a challenging task. I had to remake and rewrite two new shaders for flow map lava and assets of lava.
For best results I also simultaneously worked on the visual - textures, normals , cold and hot lava , masks to drive everything.
It was until the very late stages of the project that I wasnt exactly satisfied with the visuals. It was incredibly tricky to balance the movement of a thick mass with tools that are used mainly for water surfaces. The emissive material also had alot of issues with the normal PBR pipeline, due to its specific surface.
In the end I used a few fun tricks and the result is pretty nice when placed in a well dressed environment.
Assets were made by Emi Dimitrova, and lava as a feature and gameplay programmed by Stefan Kolchev.
