Some of my work on Assassins Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok - visuals of the Yggdrassil Roots .
We already had the roots in the background of Jotunheim for Valhalla , but this time it the scale was even greater and posed a challange.
Due to the size of the world the meshes for the roots where in scale to the player kilometers across.
This required a set of creative solutions in otder to look good and not break the performance.
I worked on a custom shader with all the blends, masks , emissive effects tilings/details/snow accumulation. Due to the complexity of it I also worked simultaneously on the textures for root, bark, masks , burned , smoldering.
The roots was created with a procedural tool by Georgi Hristov, we worked on some additions specific for the DLC on top of what we had for ACV.
The root was created by Nikolay Peev using the tool .
